Pilate's verdict is interesting:
“You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent. ¹⁵ Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty..."

There was nothing in Jesus that deserved death which is why He was the only one who could pay the price for sin.

The beginning of this chapter is very interesting. From Jesus' very own lips he explains that Salvation is totally dependant on him, not the events of ones life.

Zacchaeus was seeking Jesus & when Jesus found him Zacchaeus responded quickly & openly:
"he hurried and came down and received him joyfully".

He was filled with conviction & offered quickly to pay back where he had defrauded. His gift from Jesus was salvation. Zacchaeus contrasts the rich ruler in the previous chapter who wanted to inherit eternal life yet was sad at parting with his wealth. It is a challenge to put aside our treasures for the sake of Christ yet there is no greater reward than the gift of salvation.

Thank God he takes our mustard seed grain of faith as a start.

We need to persist & not give up seeking & asking: as in the persistent widow & also the blind beggar. The beggar was bold enough even to cry out to Jesus when others rebuked him & he did not give up the first time he cried out.

Jesus responds to the Pharisees comment that ..."This man welcomes sinners and eats with them..." with the 3 following parables of this chapter.

In each parable Jesus is saying 'go' to be with the 'sinners': searching & seeking out the lost sheep & the lost coin & even the father has gone some way to seek his son's return.

Church is a great place to be but we also need to go & tell others all that Jesus has done for us.

Jesus challenges the Pharisees in picking places of honour. Again it is a call to humility - to take the low place.

I know I've skipped a few chapters on the blog. I have read them. Lately I've been taking time to mull over some of the verses, and not reading the whole chapter. This helps me to focus and meditate on a theme for the whole day. This passage I read yesterday. The part where Jesus says... Do not fear, only believe... really struck me. Often we behave or make choices out of fear, our path's would be so much more Godly if we just Believed.

What a challenge Jesus puts to the Pharisees!

Jesus is concerned with the attitude of the heart & not the external rituals which are nothing if we have not surrendered inwardly to God. He critisizes the Pharisees who totally miss the point of the Gospel & "pass by justice and the love of God".

Being quite a practical person I've often wondered how to get the balance between Martha & Mary depicted at the end of this chapter.

Jesus says that Martha is 'distracted' by serving and later that she is 'anxious and troubled'. Yes, there is work to be done but acknowledging who is in your house (the King of Peace) should hopefully affect the way we do things. Just pausing to be in His presence is:
"the good portion, which will not be taken away... "

Oh its good to be back!!

I love the fact that when the disciples ask Jesus to send the people away so they can find food & lodgings He challenges them. Jesus actually is very practical and very immediate when He says "You give them something to eat."

Its our responsibility to do something with what we have & give it to Jesus even if it looks little because He is able to increase it. Even though the disciples produced a handful of food from the crowd in giving it to Jesus they were able to feed over 5000!

Such a familiar passage... but great to read again and again. I love the faithfullness of Anna, her dedication to the promise of God and the fulfillment of it.

Luke 3

v2...the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness...

I found this small sentance really interesting. I assume John would have know about the incredable events surrounding his birth (Luke 1), and yet he had to have the calling from God before he could start to fulfill the prophecy.

And then anpther genealogy, I love them!

The fullfillment of so many prophecies come together in this chapter. It is quite epic, yet so tender and detailed in places. Zechariah's insite into the future of his own son...

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;

The incident with the fig tree is more understandable on reading the parable of the vineyard. Jesus is speaking of Israel, and their inability to recognise him as the true Christ.

Deception can come in the form of many guises. We have to be careful not to become decievers ourselves and to guard our hearts from error.

What a beautiful picture of someone's understanding of the value of Jesus, and his gentle way of dealing with us. Again the account of Peter really touches my heart.

After Jesus healed the demon possessed man I like the fact that when people had heard about it they found him at Jesus' feet, just loving His Saviour. I'm sure that in those moments before Jesus departed He was talking to the man about the kingdom of God, equipping him to:

"Go back home and tell everyone how much God has done for you."

Jesus' wise dealings with the rich young man is so tender, rather than rebuffing him and rebuking him for claiming he had kept the commandments, Jesus tests him by offering him a further challenge. This then reveals his true heart.

The blind in sight were not blind in faith!

Its not easy pulling out just one thing from a chapter. However, I was drawn to this verse:
'Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.'

Sometimes we are quick to judge others & harsh in our judgements yet... 'For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you'.

There are some short but amazing verses in this chapter.

I love how it says that when the disciplesheard the voice of God they looked around but `they no longer saw any one with them but Jesus only'... It just reminded me of how we must sometimes see Jesus only in our sights. We can get so easily distracted. Then the other verse was 'I believe; help my unbelief!'. Such a simple proclamation of our state before God. Awesome.

The fishermen were delighted with their miraculous catch of fish but they had to obey Jesus first. This must have helped them to forsake all & trust & follow Christ.

What depths of wickedness people will stoop too when they are confronted with truth but choose to reject it. Herod's wife would stop at nothing, using her own daughter to get her own way.

Mark 7 -
Do our hearts as well as our lips honour God? When someone has trully met Jesus they can't help telling others.

Mark 8 -
Even the closest people to Jesus did not understand what he had to do. v36 What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?

As Jesus read out this Scripture all eyes were fixed on Him. He spoke with authority & in the power of the Spirit. He IS the fulfilment of the Scriptures. It begins & ends with Jesus.

God desires that we bear fruit in keeping with repentence. What we do outwardly comes out of the attitude of our heart.

What a time in history this is that God would choose for His Son to be born.

Simeon had that revelation from God through the Holy Spirit that he would see the Lord's Christ before he dies. And God revealed to him that this is the One to bring salvation.

Simeon also mentions the Gentiles.

This child was not just for Israel but for us all.

The songs in this chapter from Mary & Zechariah are so heart-felt. They talk about the mercy of God.

This is the coming of the new covenant. Zechariah speaks about God redeeming & bringing salvation & how John will prepare a way for the Lord...

The angel told the women eveything that they needed to know. The Jesus that was crucified is alive & "is not here". Hallelujah!

In those questioning moments for Peter at the end of the chapter, he chose to deny Jesus rather than be prepared to suffer the ridicule of the onlookers. And this is Peter the apostle, friend of Jesus.

I realise we are all frail at times. Yet where is our heart & mind when we are caught off guard?

May we be stirred up with a greater passion & zeal for the Lord so that we're never ashamed.

Jesus in his anger did not sin. He was controlled as he drove out the people from the temple, His Father's house.

Reading this passage again makes me wonder if Jesus was prepared for this by looking around the temple the night before in the still & quiet. He also curses the fig tree the same morning & is obviously displeased with its lack of fruit eventhough it wasn't the season for figs. Possibly a passion building within Him to see a people fruitful & passionate for the Lord.

I'm taken by the focus and determination of the Gentile woman who seeks Jesus out. She is so persistent in her request for her daughter's healing.

The power of God to set us free is so vividly shown in the case with the possessed man - the damage that evil was doing to him, then the transforming power of Jesus when he is healed.

The faith of the woman just to touch the hem of Jesus' garment is so moving and challenging. I want to touch the hem of Jesus today.

How compassionate Jesus is to the disciples when they `just don't get it'. How compassionate he is with us too! Sometimes I feel I can be some of the `other' seeds that don't do so well, and by light is shining as it should... but Praise God, he continues to sanctify me each day, and on harvest day, I'll go in the right bag because of Jesus!

'Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.'

The pain he must have felt having made the promise to his step daughter just to please others.

The story of the woman healed of the issue of blood is wonderful.

You have a glimpse of her desperation with nothing left for her but Jesus. She reaches out in faith. She doesn't just receive her healing and go but falls at Jesus' feet. Jesus chooses to address her in the midst of the crowd as 'daughter' and speaks peace and healing over her.

Jesus has authority over the weather. He speaks and the storm obeys him. Jesus challenges the disciples on their fear & lack of faith. Their eyes were on the storm & not the One who has authority over the storm.

All throughout the Gospel Matthew is clearly searching the Scriptures to see the prophecies that were fulfilled in the life of Jesus from His birth to His death.

What an awesome point in history as Jesus yielded up His Spirit. Such strange things happened marking the beginning of the New covenant that even one of the soldiers declared
"Truly this was the Son of God!"

It only appears in Matthew's gospel but even the dead were raised & appeared to many after Jesus' resurrection!! How awesome!

You wonder what is going through the disciples mind and how they handled the things Jesus is telling them; predicting His crucifixion & burial; predicting their stumbling and a betrayal; delcaring a new convenant. It must have been such an intense time.

We have the blessing of reading it all in the Bible but this was all new to the disciples. They were ordinary men walking an extraordinary life with the living God.

We all need a personal revelation of Jesus Christ. Jesus says that Peter's declaration of Jesus as "..the Christ, the Son of the living God"

was revealed to him by his Heavenly Father.

We do need to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and His ways.

Peter later rebukes Jesus for what He says about how He will die. So Jesus rebukes Peter for "not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man."

Jesus teaches on what the Kingdom of Heaven is like. Many of the parables talk of a coming judgement. God allows the righteous & the wicked to live together but there is a day coming...

He is a just God.

This caught my attention

He will not quarrel or cry out;

When I first read it I thought, but it is well known that Jesus preached etc on the streets, and he must have been quite loud when he was teaching etc. But the gist of this pasage shows he was not unruly.

a bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not quench

Most people do not think about their need for the forgiveness of sins, sin isn't really that bad and they aren't accountable to their creeator.

But when you discover GOD, and how we relate to him, you would anwer in a split second... forgiveness of sins.

Christ is our only real foundation in life so the more time we spend with Him & in the Word we will be strong and bear good fruit.
