When John prepared the way for Jesus there was already a spiritual hunger in the people:
'People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.' John's message was clear & uncompromising. Also Jesus is described as a judge: 'His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor...' And yet in the same chapter there is the picture of a dove associated with Christ: pure & gentle.
